Scenes from the Life of Christ
Between 1910 and 1913 James Ensor made a series of 32 drawings entitled Scenes from the Life of Christ. Each drawing is executed in red pencil, of which some have additions in blue, green or yellow pencil.

They differ greatly in both spirit and style. Some are very classical or conventional in composition while others are based on old master paintings. Others are 'ensorian' in spirit and composed with comical figures or grotesque faces. Ensor depicted certain scenes already in oil paintings prior to 1910, while other scenes served as studies for paintings done after 1913.
In 1921 an album of lithographs of these drawings was printed and published by the Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels.
The series of drawings has not been exhibited for more than fifty years.
Thanks to the generous loan from a private collection, The James Ensor House can now present the complete series to the public.
