You can only understand James Ensor and his art if you visit Ostend. The house where he worked and lived from 1917 until his death has been preserved in its original state, so you can still visit it today.

Vlaamse meesters op hun plek
“Met ‘Vlaamse meesters op hun plek’ willen Openbaar Kunstbezit Vlaanderen en Toerisme Vlaanderen de werken van Vlaamse meesters op bijzondere plekken in Vlaanderen en Brussel in de kijker zetten.”
Het werk Fort Wellington, een olieverf op paneel daterend uit 1876, kan hier bewonderd worden.
Op dit schilderij op paneel is het Fort Wellington te zien. Het gaat om een bakstenen fort dat tijdens de Napoleontische periode in de duinen ten westen van Oostende werd opgetrokken. In die tijd was het centrum van de stad een stuk kleiner en begonnen de duinen ter hoogte van wat nu het Thermae Palace hotel is. Vandaag vinden we op deze plaats de tribune van de Wellingtonrenbaan terug.
Museumnocturne 5 juli 2025
Tijdens de zomervakantie openen de Oostendse musea elke zaterdagavond hun deuren van 18.00 tot 22.00 uur. Ontdek expo’s in de rust van de avond, volg een rondleiding of geniet van verrassende extra’s. Elke week een ander museum, telkens helemaal gratis.
Het James Ensorhuis bijt de spits af op 5 juli.
Tijdens de museumnocturne wordt het bezoek gedaan aan de hand van infoborden die op bepaalde plaatsen staan opgesteld. Voor de kinderen is er een aangepaste zoektocht beschikbaar. Loop zeker ook eens binnen in de exporuimte voor de tentoonstelling 'Salut James' over de spectaculaire Ensorroof en kom achteraf ook alles te weten via de podcast.
