James Ensor : Satire, Parody, Pastiche

In James Ensor's varied oeuvre, satire and parody are his most popular means of expression. The often sharp and sometimes downright shameless humor of the Ostend painter is expressed in grotesque or burlesque-looking scenes in which he - without any hesitation - mocks historical facts, denounces social injustice or criticizes the politics of his time.
